Exchange of migratory document
Details:
The Exchange of Migratory Document is the process by which a foreigner who has entered Mexico with a previously issued visa may exchange such visa for a residency card. This residency may be temporary or permanent, depending on the type of visa initially issued. The process is managed by the National Immigration Institute (INM) and allows the foreigner to regularize his/her immigration status without having to leave the country. This exchange is necessary for those who have entered with a temporary or permanent residency visa and seek to obtain a resident card that allows them to remain and carry out activities in Mexico legally, such as working, studying or relocating with their family.
How long does it take?

The Exchange of Migratory Document process can take between 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the volume of applications at the INM and the correct presentation of the documentation. It is important to initiate this process within the first 30 days after entering the country to avoid penalties or immigration problems.

How long can you stay?

The residency card obtained after the Exchange of Migratory Documents is valid for 1 to 4 years for temporary residents, and is renewable. If the original visa is for permanent residence, the exchange allows obtaining the Permanent Residence, which does not have an expiration date, allowing the foreigner to reside indefinitely in Mexico.
